2008 BMW Championship: ‘Tell Sergio He’s Cute’

“IF YOU SEE SERGIO, tell him he’s cute,” said my 12-year-old daughter before I departed for the BMW Championship. “I’m pretty sure he knows that,” I told her.

I just saw Sergio. He was in the left-hand rough on the 9th, his finishing hole in today’s opening round. I didn’t tell Sergio that he was cute, but I did watch him negotiate a wet, trampled lie.

Garcia lifted his short iron shot out of the tangled grass toward the elevated green. The tightly packed gallery cheered. “Nice shot, Sergio!” As one guy noted, they weren’t applauding around the green.

Sergio's shot was short, but he chipped up and nudged in a three-footer to save par. The Spaniard carded a two-under 68. In the same group, FedEx Cup leader Vijay Singh shot an even-par 70. Mike Weir had a 69.

Bellerive Country Club is in excellent condition considering the four-plus inches of rain it received on Thursday. A good drainage system and a hard-working crew that pulled an all-nighter deserve ample credit.

Villegas Leads
Camilo Villegas fired a five-under 65 to take the first-round lead. Steve Stricker, Kenny Perry, Tim Herron, Andres Romero and Stuart Appleby are one shot back after shooting 66s.
