Biography

Hi, I'm Neil Sagebiel, the founder and editor of ARMCHAIR GOLF BLOG, one of the longest-running golf blogs on the Internet.

At the age of 12, I put down my baseball glove and picked up golf clubs. I played for my high school and community college golf teams in California. A former copywriter for a Seattle advertising agency and a major newspaper, I live in Waynesboro, Virginia.

I'm a graduate of San Diego State University.

My Unexpected Adventure

Neil Sagebiel and Jack Fleck.
I started ARMCHAIR GOLF BLOG in 2005 as an experiment. It led to meeting Jack Fleck and writing the full account of Fleck's historic upset of the great Ben Hogan at the 1955 U.S. Open:

THE LONGEST SHOT: Jack Fleck, Ben Hogan, and Pro Golf’s Greatest Upset at the 1955 U.S. Open, published by St. Martin's Press in 2012 and named one of the year's Top 10 Sports Books by Booklist.

My second book, DRAW IN THE DUNES: The 1969 Ryder Cup and the Finish That Shocked the World, published in 2014. It includes a foreword by Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin, the main characters in a gripping Ryder Cup story with a surprise ending.

Meeting Golf Legends

Through my association with Jack Fleck, I met and talked to many legends of the game, including: Errie Ball, Tommy Bolt, Dow Finsterwald, Doug Ford, Fred Hawkins, Walker Inman Jr., Mike Krak, Gene Littler, Shelley Mayfield, Arnold Palmer, Bob Rosburg, Larry Tomasino, Al Besselink, Miller Barber, Gay Brewer, Lee Elder, Jim Ferree, Bob Goalby, Tommy Jacobs, Don January, Howie Johnson, Billy Maxwell, Orville Moody, Johnny Pott, Jimmy Powell, Doug Sanders, Charlie Sifford and Bob Toski.

Through my work on DRAW IN THE DUNES, I met and talked to several more golf legends, including Jack Nicklaus, Tony Jacklin, Billy Casper, Peter Alliss and Raymond Floyd.
